PLACES IN THE ALGARVE
In addition to a unique coastal landscape with fantastic beaches, the Algarve scores with its Arabic-looking cities, picturesque fishing villages, an almost untouched hinterland with spicy air to breathe in and Mediterranean cuisine to enjoy.
LAGOS
SAGRES
SILVES
Lagos, with its historic old town, its marina and many small shops and cafes, is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the Algarve. The impressive rock formations of Ponta da Piedade, which can often be seen on postcards, are particularly worth seeing.
Sagres is the so-called “end of the world”. Here 40 meter high cliffs fall into the sea. Cabo de Sao Vicente is the most southwestern point of mainland Europe. This is a popular spot for great photos. The beaches in the area are among the most beautiful in Portugal.
Silves is the former capital of the Algarve. The old Moorish castle characterizes this somewhat sleepy place. It gets particularly lively there during the Medieval Festival in summer, when the historic center is full of jugglers, acrobats and street vendors.
MONCHIQUE
ALJEZUR
TAVIRA
The place is nestled in the Monchique Mountains. The place has been spruced up for visitors and locals in recent years. From here you can reach the highest point in the Algarve (902 meters) through beautiful terraced landscapes and nostalgic villages.
Aljezur with its Moorish castle lies in the heart of the west coast. The local farmers, small townspeople and a number of dropouts meet here for their daily shopping or a cozy chat. Aljezur is a good starting point for tours to the northwest of the Algarve.
Tavira, divided by the Rio Gilão river, is for many the most beautiful and romantic city in the Algarve. The cityscape of “the pearl of the Eastern Algarve” is characterized by well-preserved palaces, churches and old houses, crossed by narrow streets and small parks.
BEACHES OF THE ALGARVE
The beaches of the Algarve are a dream for surfers, beachcombers and sunbathers! The protected southwest of the Algarve not only boasts picturesque rock groups and cliffs that drop many meters into the depths and offer fantastic views of the sea, but is also home to some of the best surf spots in Europe. Both beginners and very experienced surfers will find excellent surfing conditions here.
There will probably never be a consensus about which beaches are the most beautiful here, but beaches like Odeceixe, Bordeira, Amado, Cordoama, Beliche, Martinhal, Zavial and Praia do Camilo are regularly in the top rankings of the most beautiful beaches in Europe and the world find.
